What kind of culinary delight do you get when you
have adult children move back in with you at the same time your ageing
parent(s) do? A Sandwich generation!
Although the term was aptly coin in 1981, in the
past 15 years more and more families have been bunking in together.
However, this is not a new concept. Many countries have generations
living together under the same roof from cradle to grave.
But for Americans, traditionally, we move out from
our parents’ home, get married, have children and then guide them to
move out, get married, and have children of their own while moving the
parents into a retirement community where they can be active with other
people their age, while our lifestyles go uninterrupted.
Well, that simply is not the case anymore. So
how do we handle caretaking parents and supporting children without
letting yourself go crazy? In her article, The Sandwich Generation:
Coping Tips for Caregivers” Ellen Woodward Potts gives some helpful tips
on how not to lose your appetite with a plate full of
responsibilities.
